Planting Today: Carrots, Sugar Snap Peas & Spinach

  • I live in the Houston Area, Texas that is…so it’s warm down here. We are in zone 9a and if you live in Texas and need to know what zone you live in, here is a nifty website to help. If you live in the U.S. here is a great website to find your zone.

I am going to cut my purple hull peas and turn over the soil. I had a disappointing yield from them so it’s time to plant something else there. I will take a knife and cut the roots up and let them decompose back in the soil. They are full of nutrients that are great to leave in the bed. I bought these new seeds from Sweet Organic Solutions and guess what? I found out why my sugar snap peas are different this year! (Donna Faye explained it for me – I’m telling you she’s smart about plant stuff) There are two kinds of sugar snap peas, the shelling kind and non-shelling kind. This year I must have planted the non-shelling ones because those are the flat ones that you typically see in stir-fry dishes. I like the shelling kind because those are thicker and tastier. I bought a seed cover that is basically a white thick cloth so I am going to plant my spinach seeds outside and just keep them covered with this cloth. I am hoping it stays more on the warm side for a while and the spinach will grow.

I love planting seeds. If I am impatient, which is often, I will buy a plant… but I love to plant seeds because I love the whole process of watching them push through the soil and make their way up to the sun. I think it is good for everyone to have a place to go to ponder and my garden is my place. I think about life and lessons I learn but mostly I am grateful. I have so many blessings in my life. My family, my faith in God and the earth that we live in. I feel closer to God when I watch plants grow and see the wonder of it all. I am grateful I can grow things that my family can eat and I’m happy. Enough of rambling… I have got to get planting and then the waiting…patience.

this is the shelling type of seeds so they should be the thick type

the thinner sugar snap pea – non shelling type

I’ve had a few garden misadventures myself. I begin every year with the best intentions, but somehow lack the patience to see the planting process through.

Nonetheless, I’ll wait patiently for your next update 😉
